V-DETECT project developement under O-CEI initiative

Over the past seven months SAMMY has developed V-DETECT, an AI-powered cloud utility that turns real-time vessel arrival data into forecasts of at-berth energy demand for a container terminal – piloted at Malta Freeport, within Pilot 4 of the O-CEI project. What the utility does:

- Ingests AIS and port-call data for the Malta Freeport area and classifies every expected vessel by type and size class.
- Assigns each class an at-berth power profile grounded in the IMO GHG Study, that can be cross-checked against measured shore-power data.
- Produces per-vessel and daily energy-demand , exposed through a documented RESTful API.
- Adds an AI-enabled detection and classification model trained on real maritime imagery for ports and marinas.

For SAMMY the project is also a bridge between two worlds: the methods validated at a large commercial terminal are being carried back to the marinas and tourist ports of our Marina 4.0 platform, where vessel detection and energy planning meet our own smart IoT infrastructure.

Our thanks to the O-CEI consortium and especially to Universitat Politècnica de València, Prodevelop, and to CMA CGM / Malta Freeport Terminals for their valuable support during the project.

V-DETECT is funded by the European Union under the Horizon Europe programme, through the first Open Call of O-CEI (Open Cloud-Edge-IoT). Views and opinions expressed are those of the author only and do not necessarily reflect those of the European Union or the European Commission.
